OT: Photosynth goes to Washington

I read a post on the Photosynth blog today that really got me excited.  It’s not necessarily SQL related, but stick with me on the topic…

The Photosynth team is partnering with CNN to cover tomorrow’s inauguration in a way that could change large scale events.  Basically, you have the opportunity to send in a photo taken from the event that will be included in one massive Photosynth.  The detail available of this event is pretty mind-blowing.  Instead of the flat, single perspective photos I remember from history classes my daughter (all 16 months of her) will be able to look back on this event and get a 360 degree view of the day.

Want to know who was in the third row, 15th seat?  That’s available.  Want to see what’s in someone’s teeth while they are smiling, you’ll get that too (hey, not all advances are good ones).  The way someone can take in an event will be very much changed, and for the better I believe.  While it’s not jet-packs or flying cars the future has to excite any lover of technology.

More hidden treasure in Windows 7 beta

I’m running the new beta as my main OS and am loving life.  The 64-bit version has been really solid with no problems to speak of.

I came across Tim Sneath’s post today of secrets and tips for Windows 7.  It’s got 30 items covered in significant detail, not your typical “there’s a new taskbar” fluff you will find on other sites.

One item I can personally corroborate is installing Windows 7 on a netbook via USB flash drive.  I bought a Dell Mini 9 over the Christmas break and put 7 on it last week.  The install went faster than on my Magenic laptop and runs like a champ.

I have to say this is the best beta experience I’ve ever had from a Microsoft OS.  Now if they can just get it out to the door to coincide with my company’s Q3 laptop refresh I will be super happy.

SQL Server 2010 Preparation

I know this title sounds crazy when SQL Server 2008 is less than a year old, but progress never stops…

Database Journal has an interesting interview with Herain Oberoi, group project manager for the SQL Server Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse product.  While the majority of the detail is a rehash of PASS or BI conference announcements the last couple questions I found interesting.  Herain discusses some of the ways businesses can position themselves to take advantage of SQL Server 2010 once it is ready.

The shortened release cycle that has been introduced with SQL Server 2008 means that more companies need to keep their eye on the next versions to make sure they mitigate the learning curve necessary for migrations.  I’m going to try to do the same with this blog.  I feel it’s important to discuss current topics that will help others but I like a little future discussion too.  Happy reading.  :)
